截金には欠かせない金箔

截金で使用する金箔は截金師自身が細工ように作成します。
その繊細な金箔を細く綺麗に切るために、鹿皮を貼った台の上で竹刀で切ります。

何故鹿皮を使用するかというと、他の皮よりも柔らかく弾力があるため繊細な金箔を取り扱うために適していること、弾力があることで竹刀を傷めにくいこと、そして滑りにくく繊細な作業を行いやすいこと。

現代は様々な素材が開発され発展していますが、それでも現在でも截金の細工を行う時には鹿皮の台が一番適しており、伝統的に使用され続けています。

Gold leaf indispensable for Kirikane

The gold leaf used in Kirikane is created by the Kirigane craftspeople themselves.
In order to cut the delicate gold leaf thinly and beautifully, it is cut with a bamboo sword on a stand covered with deerskin.

The reason why deerskin is used is that it is softer and more elastic than other skins, making it suitable for handling delicate gold leaf; its elasticity prevents Chikutou (cutting tool) from being damaged; and it is non-slip, making it easy to perform delicate work.

Although various materials have been developed in the modern age, the deerskin stand is still the most suitable for cutting goldsmithing today, and it continues to be used traditionally.
